Stubbing vs Oddfellows (3/2/2008)
A heated contest between Stubbing Wharf and bottom of the league team, Oddfellows, ended as a closely fought 2-1 win to the Wharf. Having taken eleven points from their last five games, Stubbing are on the most successful run yet, but the game threatened to turn ugly at several flash points.
With no referee, an Oddfellows player stepped into the breach allowing the game to be officiated, but he faced a tough game to control.
The game started well for Stubbing, Tom Russell whipping a ball across the area, his strike partner, Jerry Gregg, connecting but only to steer the ball wide of the far post. Then Rob Kenworthy powered in a free kick that the Oddfellows keeper barely held onto. By this time tackles were flying in hard from both sides and things were beginning to boil over.
The first controversial moment came as the returning Rick Payne sent Gregg away from the half-way line. Gregg continued into the area, only to seemingly be brought down by the keeper after rounding him. A penalty was given, despite accusations of diving from the Oddfellows team, and some pushing and shoving developed round the pitch. Neil Dewiss stepped up for the spot kick once a relative peace had been restored, but sent the ball wide.
Stubbing regrouped at half-time and came out flying; only moments in, Rory O'Hanlon, Wharf's attacking full-back, launched a throw-in to the edge of the area where Gregg took control of the ball, turned his marker, and volleyed home for a 1-0 lead to the Wharf.
The lead was cemented five minutes later – a loose ball pinballed around the Oddfellows area, before finally falling to Ryan Fairburn who promptly dispatched it into the top right-hand corner of the goal.
Chances continued to come at both ends, Gregg and Russell both going close, till Oddfellows converted one themselves, leading to a tense finish. Resolute defending from centre-halves Kenworthy and Spencer Berrett, supported by their full-backs, meant the Wharf hung on to a decisive victory.
The team are now on a fine run, player-manager Gregg setting a target of thirty points for the season – only ten more needed.
Stubbing and MacMillans Play Out Draw (27/01/2008)
Stubbing Wharf scrapped to a one-all draw with MacMillans in a tough away game, which both sides will consider a well-earned point. Jerry Gregg’s calm finish gave Wharf the lead after an hour, before a somewhat controversial equaliser for the home team meant the game ended in deadlock.
Truth be told, these two sides cancelled each other out for large sections of the game and there were very few moments of creativity. Instead it was graft and battle that dominated the game, with both defences allowing barely a shot on their respective goals. Bob Kenworthy skippered his team with his normal commanding presence at the heart of the Wharf defence, supported by the returning Matt Gibbons.
Despite their pace, the Wharf forwards were not getting behind the Macmillans back four as they would have liked, and the first half ground to a halt without a shot on target.
Stubbing did come out for the second half showing more of the style that had seen them score five times in the previous game, first Arron Edwards burst through from midfield on a mazy run till finally being crowded off the ball; then the break through – Gaz Proctor found himself in space on the Wharf left wing and picked out his strike partner Gregg who had made a great run into the Macmillans area. The finish was simple but effective, and Stubbing were in the lead.
As has often been their nature, though, Wharf lost concentration and would have found themselves immediately back on level terms if not for Rob Leedham’s fine stop from MacMillans’ influential forward. The scare still wasn’t enough to refocus Stubbing’s play, and moments later it was level, albeit in somewhat contentious circumstances. MacMillans attacked down their right wing but seemed to be going nowhere under the close attentions of Rory O’Hanlon at left-back. Then O’Hanlon appeared to be tripped, leaving the opposition winger to continue unchecked and, despite Stubbing’s furious appeals, the home side had equalised.
A draw seemed, on the face of it, to be a fair result, and maintained Stubbing’s five match unbeaten run. The manner of the Macmillan goal left a bitter taste however, compounded by a near miss for Stubbing in the final minute.
Wharf Grab Five (13/01/2008)

Stubbing Wharf FC’s best, most collective performance of the season left high-flying Church Stile Stallions out of breath and out of the game on a gusty Sunday afternoon. Stubbing scored an impressive five away goals to the Stallions late strike, completing a league double against the home team.
Everything started with Stubbing’s aggressive central midfield partnership, Arron Edwards and Neil Dewis. They tore into the opposition’s midfield from the kick off, setting a standard for the Wharf who were clearly in the mood. But it didn’t take this mood, or the early possession, to give Wharf the lead. Tom Breckin, at right back, took a quick throw in to Tom Russell; the quick-footed centre forward turned his marker and whipped in a ball. The wind got behind it and Stubbing were deservedly one up.
Captain Rob Kenworthy was holding a tight line at the back and Church Stile were finding few openings. And, as Stubbing pressured from every position, they grabbed their second. Jez Gregg nicked the ball off a hesitant defender and played in Russell, who dispatched confidently past the keeper.
Despite a change of ends, and so a change of wind advantage, Wharf still controlled the game; Alex Potts was dominating the right-side of midfield and it was only fit his was the next goal. Gregg jinked into the Church Stile area, was stopped bravely by the home keeper, but the rebound was met clumsily by a Stallion defender. Penalty given, Potts blasted home and the tie was all but over.
The home side mustered several dangerous moments; two dealt with by spectacular challenges by Spencer Berrett, one a full-blooded sliding tackle, but their best chance was a long, powerful strike, parried away by Rob Leedham’s full length save. Leedham didn’t deserve to concede a goal, but the Stallions did eventually scramble one in.
This consolation, though, was wiped out moments from the end to round off a quality display from Stubbing. Gregg swung in a deep corner which was met by Breckin's head and the game was over.
New Look Stubbing Beat Second-Place Church Stile Stallions
(02/12/2007)
In a spirited and deserved fight back, Stubbing Wharf came from a first-half deficit of two goals to collect a handsome 4-2 victory against league newcomers, Church Stile Stallions.
Church Stile had started their first league campaign in fine form, leading candidates for a promotion spot and only one loss to their names having played half a season’s games already.
Stubbing Wharf, on the other hand, had lurched from inspirational to woeful on an almost game-by-game basis, unable to find consistency in their results. This Sunday, however, wearing new team colours of all-red, Wharf managed to show both sides of their talents – an incoherent, muddled first half saw them concede twice; forty-five minutes later, and a flowing and confident team had scored four times, looking dangerous every time they took possession.
Captain Rob Kenworthy began the come back for the home team, launching a free kick from barely inside the Stallion’s half that a motionless keeper watched nestle in the corner of his goal. Visibly lifted, Wharf poured forward, combative midfielders Arron Edwards and Neil Dewis seizing control of the game.
Minutes later and player-manager, Jez Gregg, had grabbed an equaliser, squeezing the ball under the Stallion keeper to cap a fine move by Stubbing. Gregg repeated this trick once more, bringing his goals tally to nine for the season, before Edward’s jinking run and incisive pass put Aziz Dinc away on goal. Dinc finished in superb style, capping a determined and attacking second-half performance by Wharf.
Gregg will have been as pleased by the heart showed by his players as the win itself, but will hope it is the Stubbing Wharf side that rolled over a team as strong as Church Stile who turn up for next Sunday’s game.
Stubbing lose 4-2 to Carrington (09/09/2007)
In a stark contrast to their strong defensive performance the previous weekend, Stubbing Wharf conceded four goals at home to Carrington, in a game they could have won. Despite strikes from both wingers, Stubbing lost the game in a spell of football part way through the second half, during which Carrington struck twice and Wharf failed to be awarded a penalty. Stubbing did dominate the majority of the first forty-five, scoring the opening goal after a neat exchange between Rob Leedham and Ricky Payne presented their right-winger with a chance on the edge of the area, the strike curling into the corner of the net. More chances came (and went), till almost inevitably, Stubbing’s profligacy was punished when Carrington scored from a set piece. To make matters worse, Spencer Berrett and Alex Potts picked up knocks, neither able to return after the interval. The second half started a more even affair - clearly the next goal would be decisive, and so it proved. Josh Anstee made good progress down the left flank, before releasing Jez Gregg. The forward’s speed took him into the area and seemingly past the last defender, only to be clearly felled by an errant leg. To the home side’s disbelief though, the referee waved away their protests and the game continued. The disappointment seemed to aversely affect Stubbing’s play and Carrington took control, scoring soon after. The Wharf keeper did well to palm away a snap shot but Carrington reacted first, their forward tapping in the loose ball. Stubbing were visibly deflated, losing first another player to injury, Leedham, then two more goals in the space of a few minutes. An excellent individual goal by Anstee raised them again for the last twenty minutes but it wasn’t nearly enough, the game ending 4-2.
Battling Stubbing Start with Win (02/09/2007)
In rain-swept conditions, Stubbing Wharf FC kicked off the new season with a 1-0 away victory against league newcomers, Friendly Rangers. Formerly the Last Order Aliens, Stubbing have restructured over the summer - a new home pub, new management, and several new signings. Clearly something has worked, as player-manager Jerry Gregg saw his team out-battle Friendly to a deserved three points. Stubbing dominated a scrappy first half, with the midfield pairing of Arron Edwards and Rob Leedham controlling proceedings with their fiery tackling and energy. A string of corners and free kicks were forced as the pressure grew, one goalmouth scramble seeing the ball flash across the six yard box, somehow evading a single touch. Friendly just held on, but then found little change from Stubbing’s back four, captain Rob Kenworthy marshalling his defence well. Still, Stubbing were left frustrated as half time arrived, their domination and chances having come to nothing. Friendly started the second half with more possession and almost shocked Stubbing when their strong forward broke free, only to blaze over from inside the area. Slowly though, Wharf regained control of the game, their powerful winger, Josh Anstee, becoming increasingly influential. The Friendly keeper was forced into a string of good saves, saving particularly well with his legs from Gregg’s shot. Then, at last, the deadlock was broken: Leedham swung the ball in from another corner, Kenworthy directed it goalwards, and amidst the resulting confusion, man of the match Anstee poked the ball home. Stubbing’s failure to convert earlier chances made for an uncomfortable last fifteen minutes, though they will be delighted with their overall performance, overcoming a strong Friendly side with a committed and resolute effort; Spencer Berrett and Anstee excelling in particular. Gregg can be rightfully pleased with his new side’s strong start.
